The site known as Lower Steenberg’s Yard sits on the west bank of the Ouseburn River in the lower Ouseburn Valley. The location derives its name from previous use by a storage and warehousing company. The site is shared by the highly successful Toffee Factory development, which has been a vital part of the recent influx of creative and digital businesses.
In 2012 Carillion Igloo bid for, and won, the opportunity to enter into a Development Agreement with Newcastle City Council for four sites in the lower Ouseburn Valley. Lower Steenberg’s Yard, across the Ouseburn from The Malings, is the second phase of this development.
xsite were commissioned to deliver a scheme which works with the character of the Ouseburn Valley and makes a positive contribution to the Ouseburn Valley in terms of design, environmental and economic impacts. The vision is for a mix of new housing and workspaces, with workspaces linked to the management of the Toffee Factory.
The project has received planning approval and work is progressing to take it to the construction stage.
