Project Info:
Brief: Convert a 1904 colliery workshops building to flexible gallery space for touring exhibitions, with facilities for exhibition storage, precise environmental control, and catering facitilites for up to 250 persons.
Design: A 140 sq m cor-ten clad extension to the west of the building was designed to house all mechanical and electrical services, catering and sanitary facilities and storage requirements.
This facilitated the opening up of the existing building, which was extensively cleared and refurbished to it’s original form, removing all modern rooms and corridors to create approximately 450 sq metres of open-plan exhibition space. New gallery linings and lighting provide a flexible environment for exhibitions, whilst revealing the historic roof structure and wall fabric above.
